Where Love Remains

Where Love Remains is one of two possible endings to the Birds series. It follows What the Earth Remembers; its companion, When Love Fails, follows the same book along a different path. They are alternatives, and you can read either or both.

I wanted to explore a hopeful outcome without making cooperation effortless. Knowing that people need one another does not settle who will take a risk, who will share a resource, or who will remain responsible when the first agreement becomes inconvenient. Hope has to survive those ordinary decisions if it is to matter beyond a speech.

The characters bring their unfinished relationships into a wider crisis. Anneliese and Gabriel, Valeria and Leandro, and the people around them still have work to do in understanding one another. The demands of the wider world do not suspend that work. Often they make it harder.

For me, the question at the centre of this ending is whether care can reach far enough. We may be generous to someone we know and frightened of people we meet only through an account of their needs. Institutions can help us act beyond that limit, but only if people are willing to build and maintain them.

This is an imagined future. It offers no prediction that events must unfold this way. I hope it offers something more useful to a novel: people whose choices you can understand, difficulties that do not vanish because they mean well, and a future you can imagine wanting them to reach.
