Before the Birds Return

Before the Birds Return grew from my fascination with the people whose work begins long before most of us know there is a danger: scientists watching birds in remote landscapes, researchers studying a changing virus, and teams carrying a vaccine from an idea to a waiting community. I wanted to imagine the lives behind that work—the unfinished conversations, the difficult choices, and the people hoping they would come home. I also wanted to explore how love grows through discovering another person: witnessing their kindness, recognizing their faults, and learning to make room for them. This novel brings those interests together with an ancient mystery and the possibility of a second chance. Its scientific foundations are explored in the appendix, where real research is distinguished from invention. At its heart are people trying to protect a future they may never see, while learning how to share the life before them.
